Marjorie Hulsizer Copher Award

The Copher Award or Marjorie Hulsizer Copher Award is recognized as the highest honor the American Dietetic Association can give. It has special ties to the St. Louis Dietetic Community. The award was established by Dr. Glover Copher, Marjorie's husband following her death.

Following World War I, where she was recognized for her outstanding achievements, Marjorie came to work at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. The award is always presented by a registered dietitian who is a staff member of Barnes (now Barnes-Jewish) Hospital as a result. The award gives a monetary stipend to the recipient that is chosen based on the following criteria:

 

1. Organized a large-scale effort which has advanced the status of usefulness of the profession.
2. Performed with outstanding technical competence in (a) writing or (b) scientific research or (c) management or (d) education.
3. Has been a source of inspiration to other members, who have themselves become leaders.
4. Has been a trail-blazer for the profession, i.e., has created new opportunities for dietitians.
5. Has served in an advisory capacity that has contributed uniquely to the advancement of the profession or to better health practices, to the development of others in the profession, and encouraged advanced study.
6. Has demonstrated devotion to the high standards of the profession and served under exceptionally difficult circumstances.
7. Has made contributions to the profession of dietetics as a part of a broad contribution to human progress and betterment.
8. Has received professional recognition from colleagues, other inportant related organizations, schools, or colleges through outstanding personal and professional conduct.
9. Has demonstrated the spirit of service to others in the field of dietietics, allied fields and the American Dietetic Association.
